Understanding the relationship between design and technology is critical to the understanding of architecture. Aimed at architectural students, this book provides an accessible introduction to all aspects of architectural technology: structural physics, structural elements and forms, heating, lighting, environmental control and computer modelling. As well as providing a clear grounding in these topics, it will also help students to integrate their design thinking with appropriate structural and environmental solutions. The book sets out to explain the relationships between physical phenomena, materials, building elements and structural types using simple classification systems and real world examples. Photographs are used to familiarize the user with common construction technology, while historical examples are employed to chart significant moments in the history of architectural engineering. The book also explores current computer techniques for assisting students to predict the structural and environmental behaviour of buildings. Written by experienced teachers, it will be invaluable for those contemplating the study of architecture and those already on such a course.
Will McLean and Pete Silver both teach at The School of Architecture and the Built Environment (SABE) at The University of Westminster, London. They are contributing authors to Fabrication – The Designer’s Guide (2006).

The physical scale model is often cited as an important tool of communication for architecture students and practitioners alike. Although the proliferation of CAD programmes has enabled the creation of increasingly complex computer models and virtual environments, there is also a growing need to address the three-dimensional qualities of architecture that may be lost when using such media. This book focuses on the inspiring possibilities for modelling the built environment with all the different media and techniques that are now available.
Through description of the use of different models in different contexts, the book provides a practical and effective guide to how and why models are used, in addition to what they are used for, and, furthermore, how they relate to architecture education.
Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into three sections: Media, Types and Applications. The book is generously illustrated with photographs of models, accompanying commentaries, and step-by-step practical instructions on the various techniques associated with modelmaking. Architectural Modelmaking will provide a concise yet broad ‘toolbox’ for students of architecture.
Nick Dunn is Principal Lecturer at the Manchester School of Architecture. His research interests are in the fields of visualization, representation in architecture and urbanism. His publications include 'The Ecology of the Architectural Model' (2007).

The Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius declared firmitas, utilitas and venustas - firmness, commodity and delight - to be the three essential attributes of architecture. These qualities are brilliantly explored in this book, which uniquely comprises a detailed survey of Western architecture, including Pre-Columbian America, and an introduction to architecture from the Middle East, India, Russia, China and Japan. The text encourages readers to examine closely the pragmatic, innovative and aesthetic attributes of buildings, and to imagine how these would have been praised or criticized by contemporary observers. Artistic, economic, environmental, political, social and technological contexts are discussed so as to determine the extent to which buildings met the needs of clients, society at large and future generations.
Michael Fazio is emeritus professor of architecture at Mississippi State University. The late Marian Moffett taught architectural history at the University of Tennessee. Her publications include A History of Western Architecture (1989), with Lawrence Wodehouse. Lawrence Wodehouse, also deceased, taught architectural history at the University of Dundee and various American universities. His many books included British Architects, 1840 to 1976 (1978) and White of McKim, Mead, and White (1988).

While computers have facilitated and enriched the ways in which architects can develop and present their ideas, there is also a growing lack of skills in other forms of image-making that was traditionally furnished through training in drawing and sketching. This book focuses on the exciting possibilities for representing the built environment with all the techniques – both ancient and modern – that are now available.
Students today need to learn the following skills: how to draw using a range of media, the basic rules of making effective spatial images, how to read a drawing, and how to express ideas through appropriate media and forms of communication. Following a brief introduction, the book is divided into three sections: Media, Types and Places. Each section is illustrated with key drawings and accompanying commentaries. Step-by-step sequences and special tips will further help students to make the most of their newly acquired skills. This book will be an indispensable practical and inspirational resource in architectural schools and practices alike.

Now in its third edition and fully updated with the most recent examples, A History of Interior Design tells the story of 6,000 years of domestic and public space. John Pile acknowledges that interior design is a field with unclear boundaries, in which construction, architecture, furniture, decoration, technology and product design all overlap. These topics are woven together in a fascinating narrative that runs from cave dwellings and temple architecture, through Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance palaces, to the grand civic spaces of the nineteenth century and the sleek interiors of modern skyscrapers. Embedded in a social and political context, detailed discussions of famous buildings, from the Parthenon to the Pompidou Centre, are interspersed with investigations of the domestic vernacular – the cottages, farmhouses, apartments and city terraces inhabited by ordinary people. In this new edition, the evolution of interior design has been made even more accessible through the inclusion of a CD-ROM with an interactive timeline. Incorporating over 100 illustrations, this sets the great interior spaces of the world in the context of the social, political and technological developments of the time.
John Pile was Professor of Design at the renowned Pratt Institute Brooklyn for most of his teaching career. He is the author of twelve books on furniture, colour, draughtsmanship, office planning and other aspects of interior design.
